About Me!
Hi! My name is Melissa Benoit and I'm 32 years old and live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I graduated from Michigan State University in 2009 where I earned a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in Psychology.
After completing my undergraduate degree, I completed a full year of student teaching at Detroit School of the Arts in Detroit, Michigan to obtain my teaching certification.
After student teaching, I got a full time job as a high school English teacher at Allegan High School in Allegan, Michigan (about 45 min southwest of Grand Rapids). It was my first teaching job and I spent three years teaching there. I taught mostly 12th grade English, but also taught a few English classes of 9th-11th graders. As one of the 12th grade options, students could take a blended English class, where they spent half the time in class and the other half using an online forum, Moodle. Students completed numerous multimedia projects including writing blogs, using Google Drive, creating MovieMaker movies, as well as designing research presentations. The experience not only taught them valuable technology skills, but prepared them for college and career expectations.
After my positive experience teaching technology at Allegan, I decided to go back for my Master's in Educational Technology (MAET) degree at Michigan State University. I spent two years in the program designing interactive lessons, creating differentiated assessments, and flipping my classroom (check out my work in the "Technology Showcase" page). I earned my master's degree in August 2013.
With a newly acquired masters degree, I decided to embrace a new challenge and headed to the east coast to continue my teaching career. I now work at High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland (about 40 minutes northeast of DC) teaching 11th grade English and Advanced Placement Language and Composition.
After three years teaching in Maryland, I decided to head back to the midwest and return to teaching at Allegan High School. I am currently teaching Honors 9th grade English, Senior English (including a blended section), and Advanced Placement Literature and Composition.
Below is a short video I made in the MAET program to introduce myself!
