MAET Classes
These were classes I took once I was accepted to the Master's of Educational Technology (MAET) program. All of these classes helped me learn more about educational technology, how to be a technology leader, and how to successfully apply technology in my classroom.
CEP 800 - "Learning in Schools and Other Settings"
Spring 2013, Danah Henrickson
Credible Source Project
In this class the focus was on different psychological perspectives and how they pertain to student understanding. We spent time learning about the different perspectives and then used them to think about our own teaching. We also did a lot of analyzing student understanding by preforming interviews and then interpreting what the answers meant. I also made a digital movie showcasing the psychological perspectives on student learning. I taught students how to find credible sources and gauged how well they were able to understand the information. The class was a great way to start understanding students and thinking about the best way to incorporate technology to meet their needs.
CEP 815- "Technology and Leadership"
Spring 2013, Leigh Wolf
De-motivational Poster Example
In this class we focused a lot on leadership and how it pertains to teaching both academically and professionally. A lot of the different assignments had to do with realizing what it means to be a true leader and what different types of leaders exist. It was a lot of professional writing like case studies, letters to a school board, etc. The class also focused on missional verse instrumental thinking, making it clear that it's more important to incorporate technology for a purpose and not just to have the newest tool. The class had a lot of helpful information for thinking about technology and it really helped me recognize my role as a leader in the technology field.
CEP 820 - "Teaching K-12 Students Online"
Summer 2013, Anne Heintz
Blended Class Moodle
This class was focused around learning how to teach students online. We were asked to pick a platform to use to create our online classroom. I chose to use Moodle since I have access to it through my school. I spent a lot of time thinking about what to incorporate into my Moodle and the best tools for student learning. I had to do things like create a screencast and reflect on readings using Google Docs. As the course continued, I added tools, content, and resources to my Moodle page to make it a helpful place for students to visit. The end result was a hybrid classroom environment. I gained knowledge and confidence in running this type of classroom with my students.
CEP 822 -"Approaches to Educational Research"
Summer 2013, E. David Wong
Researching and Citing Sources
This class was based on researching different educational principals. The class focused on learning how to research and also how to analyze data. I created a research study based on using e-readers in the classroom. I also learned statistics tools to help me analyze different types of data, like MEAP scores. Using Excel, I was able to manipulate the data to learn things like standard deviation and t-tests. I was also able to create charts to visually view the data. As an English major, I learned a lot from this class. It definitely improved my research skills and also helped understanding data a little less intimidating.
CEP 807 - "Capstone Portfolio Course"
Summer 2013, Matthew Koehler
Capstone Portfolio Weebly
This was the culminating class in the MAET program. The class was focused on showcasing our learning of technology through the creation of a website. We included a resume, the courses we completed, technology we've implemented, and some essays. I chose to use a Weebly page and my website can be found at: melissabenoit.weebly.com. As we completed each task, we collaborated with peers to get helpful feedback from other educational technology participants. It was a great way to reflect on the master's program and showcase all my hard work!
